Ukraine War Day #787: Soldiers Kill Cop At Checkpoint

Dear Readers:

Russian and Ukrainian media are reporting about a crime that happened late last night/early this morning, in the Vinnytsia Oblast of Ukraine, somewhere between the villages of Florino (Ukr Floryne and Elanets (Ukr Yalanets).

To zoom out the map to a somewhat broader scale: Those villages are somewhere around the town of Bershad, not far from the border to Moldavia, to the West. The Odessa Oblast is South from there.

Now that we have established the approximate location of the crime:

The Perps

Russian media reported that two unknown white males dressed in army fatigues shot and killed a policeman at a checkpoint. This after their off-road vehicle was stopped at the checkpoint, and the cops manning the checkpoint asked to see their documents. In response the two men opened fire, killing one cop, wounding a second cop (who had to be hospitalized); and then speeding away in the direction of Odessa.

Russian media did not yet know the identity of the perps, and left it implied that they were foreign mercenaries.

Security camera footage shows the two perps in what looks to be a grocery or convenience/ liquor store.

However, somewhat later, the Ukrainian newspaper STRANA got a scoop on the identity of the two perps. They are not foreign mercs, they are Ukrainian soldiers.

They consist of a father-son team of criminals, both of whom are soldiers serving in the Ukrainian military; more specifically, in the 28th Mechanized Brigade.

Unmasked perps: Valery Vasilake, and his son Vitaly.

The older man, Valery, was born in 1972, a native of the town of Chornomin, Vinnytsia Oblast. His son, Vitaly, was born in 1998. STRANA posts additional photos (from Vitaly’s Facebook) of the men in uniform, proving that they (or least the younger Vitaly) is still in active service, in the 28th Mechanized.

The Vic

Maxim Zaretsky

Now turning to the main victim of this heinous crime: Ukrainian National Police confirmed to STRANA that the cop who was killed in this attack was 20-year-old Maxim Zaretsky.

His photo shows him to be a young, baby-faced police cadet. Maxim graduated from the National Police Academy and, for the past year and a half, has been serving as a patrol officer. He was the only child in his family.

The name of Maxim’s colleague, who is recovering in the hospital, is not given.

Nor is any motive yet given, or known, for the attack. Presumably the two perps are still on the run. It is anybody’s guess what they were up to, although one good guess among the comments on the VZGLIAD piece, is that they had decided to desert from the army.

Another guess: The son decided to desert, his papa took him on a crime spree, they stopped for vodka, were not expecting to be stopped at the checkpoint, opened fire… Now they are on the run. Neither piece states which direction they were headed when stopped. If Westward, maybe they were making a run for the Moldavian border. However, after the shooting, they were headed South, towards Odessa, so probably that was their original direction as well. In which case, god only knows what they intend to do, or how they propose to escape from the country. Do they plan to swim to Romania?

I’ve already come across several comments about Odessa being the Ukrainian center of organised crime and it would be interesting to get additional and more substantive informations about this matter.

Reestablishing the rules and conventions of a civilised society after the end of the war will undoubtedly be a gargantuan task for whoever controls the Ukrainian lands and there could  be “chaos and anarchy” in wide areas.

Odessa has always been the center of organized crime, since Soviet times and even earlier. In their humorous books about the likable crook Ostap Bender, Soviet authors Ilf and Petrov described the ethnic Mafias that basically ran the city. The action takes place in the 1920’s, and very little has changed since then, except the modern-day crime syndicates are not very likable at all.

When I think of Odessa I think of a frontier city on the make…Russian, Greeks, Italians with a late 19th century influx of Jews [from Galicia..natch]. A mix and culture not unlike Chicago but, with better weather in spite of it being farther north. A city of Spy Novel intrigues, jazz, a once active art scene [probably now extinct] modern, progressive ideas, brothels and gangsters [I believe the Jews from Galicia ran the gangs].

Because of the ethnic mix it will be a shit-show to fix at first but, with Putin’s hardcore principle that any corruption must be small in scale and tread lightly on productive society, I believe an accommodation will be reached in the aftermath of much internecine violence. I add, Israel/Israelis has/have really shit on itself/themselves by shitting on Russia’s clients in the ME. It’ll be a hard sell for Israelis who are now hard-core fascist in Israel, [and that’s putting it nicely] to be welcomed back to Odessa. And with 3LAs help, totalitarian Zionists definitely will try to return to Odessa. I would advise Putin, upon liberation of Odessa, to issue a right of return proclamation to those pogromed out of Odessa in the post-Soviet meltdown years by 3LA-backed Galicians who then confiscated the exile’s property or, bought said property for pennies-on-the-dollar.

Which brings up a point, Russian authorities should make every effort to secure complete property records in the lands being returned to Russia and already have in place…a special court to adjudicate property claims fairly and expeditiously so that those forced to flee or, who have been dispossessed by the 3LA’s gang of goosestepan-Galicians are given full redress to their property rights. Nothing would better serve the rebuilding effort, about to be undertaken, than the knowledge that land stolen/taken over the last three decades will be returned. That said, all who partake in this gargantuan effort to rebuild the Russian lands of Ukrainia should profit by their efforts.

That’s a good idea about a special court to adjudicate property claims. Step #1 will be to nullify all NATO land grabs. I was just reading that Zelensky’s camarilla had to promise more farm lands to Western buyers as part of the new aid package deal. I don’t know the details, though. But I imagine a special court can renounce this along with other odious debts, and return this land to the original farmers, or perhaps to the state, if they were part of the sovkhoz system.

Continuing the horror of weapons of mass destruction to presumably slaughter Ukies of the desperado criminal or Bandera persuasions, I see Russia is now claiming improvements in “volumetric” bombs. That’s the air fuel mixture bomb some call thermobaric. They’ve got titchy little ones like the TOS-1A and now TOS-2, which can be laiunched up to 15 klicks or so like a MLRS (details on Wikipedia), plus of course air-launched ones, both guided and unguided, the latter drifting lazily to earth by parachute. If you see one, you’re soon dead. But the Russians are developing bigger ones to rival tactical nukes in power. How nice. No radiation, just grilled meat and collapsed lungs and guts.

In an ordinary tone, this linked article discusses recent developments, and is perfectly happy to say these bombs will kill Ukies by the thousands and end the SVO/war. Quite chilling how calm the author is.

And the link below has both English and Russian, plus video in Russian, so that yalensis can absorb the horror in several different and alarmed ways.

The article has a very nice vid that shows the building and progression of the pressure-wave. It hints that Russia might deploy the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Father_of_All_Bombs, which seems a bit propagandist and unlikely as bombs that heavy are deployed by pushing them out the back of a transport plane.

In any event, the Ukrainians and their mercenary friends really enjoy having a flame-thrower warhead land on them and do have a lot to say about it on the interwebs. The really neat thing is that if your lungs are not incinerated the overpressure turns you inside out, and should that prove insufficient the blast consumes available oxygen and is superb for demolishing all but the sturdiest structures. And! If for some reason the bomb doesn’t go off right, its accelerants are often toxic and very unhealthy to breathe.

Yes, thermobarics are the equivalent of fumigation.

So, a person literally gets turned inside out, like pulling a sock through itself? That doesn’t sound like a nice way to die, although I imagine it’s quick.

Perhaps you’ve seen this news already, but FWIW, Lord Bebo Twaated the latest developments on this sordid affair:

Fark! Not sure if any of that is clickable. I tried here in this sorta
preview” mode but nothing happened. I’ll repost the link with another WordPress schwingle. Maybe that will function. If nothing else, you can cut and paste what’s below:

If what he reports is true — the photos make it seem so, but in this post-reality world I don’t believe anything at first glance — then the cop-killers have been captured. When you write a once-a-day blog as you do (and I don’t know how you can keep doing it for 785 days) it’s impossible to be as up-to-date as a compulsive Twaaterer. Bebo and Simplicius Twaat so much that they MUST be a collective. If they were sole proprietwaators, they wouldn’t have enough free time left over to even eat and shit. Unless they did both at the same time! That might work.

P.S. It looks good in my Safari browser (for some reason, not so much in Firefox, which I have to use to type comments for some reason unbeknownst to me the non-tech doofus.) Sorry about the doubling up of the image. I’m not as good at this stuff as you and Brennan!
