Dear Readers:
My blog “AwfulAvalanche” has been up for approximately one month now, and I thought I should do some metrics. Although, to be honest, I don’t know what the criterion is for measuring success or failure.
But I will attempt to do some metrics at the close of every month. Thus, here are the numbers for the month of September, according to my trusty WordPress stats:
- AwfulAvalanche had 2,123 page views.
- More significant is the number of distinct people who visited my blog: 359 (yay! Thanks, 359 people, whoever you are!)
- These 359 people dial in from the following countries, in order of most to least: U.S., U.K., New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Mexico, Russia, France, Brazil, Norway, Romania, Germany, Lithuania. It makes sense that the Anglophone countries get more hits, since that is actually my target audience.
- I think it is awesome, and I am honored, that people from all these diverse countries have clicked on one or more of my posts.
- I don’t get as many comments as I would wish for. I would like my readers to express their opinions, both positive and negative. I purposely disabled the “like” feature for my posts, in order to stimulate people to comment. Maybe that’s not the right thing to do. I am a very verbal person myself, and I prefer actual comments to people just clicking on “like”. But that’s just me.

For a new blog, AA is doing fine as it is. News about AA will take time to spread: it’ll most likely be if you were to post something that’s of interest to Russia Insider, Off-Guardian or some other widely read news site and someone picks up that story and recommends it to them. The fact that you’ve had visitors from places like Brazil, Lithuania and Norway shows you’re already making headway. Take note if you get any pingbacks on posts too – this means people have linked to them from their own blogs. (Although some pingbacks might happen mainly because some blogs might be actively looking for connections to them via keywords.)
Don’t expect too many comments at first as you are posting very frequently and most of your posts don’t deal with very political or controversial matters. Your coverage of Natalia Savchenko’s trial is the first really meaty set of posts and those will probably attract more comments than your other articles.
